A silhouette that has transcended night to day, lingerie to couture.
The babydoll has lived many lives and for good reason: it is timeless.
Born in the early 20th century—a period when fashion began shifting away from the constraints of the corset—the babydoll silhouette first appeared as a literary reference in the 1912 novel “Captain Martha May” by Avery Abbot. In the text, a character’s dress is described as “the length of a stovepipe with a frill at the bottom,” calling it the babydoll dress.
Defined by its empire waist, soft volume, and short length, the silhouette has always carried an undertone of liberation.
It wasn't until years later this dress gained a functional purpose, led by lingerie designer, Sylvia Pedlar. As a response to fabric shortages from WWII, nightgowns grew shorter and the legs grew longer!
In 1958, Cristóbal Balenciaga reintroduced the babydoll through a couture lens, elevating what was once confined to bedroom intimacy into high fashion.
From there, designers focused on reinterpreting this silhouette across their collections, adding momentum to the playful rebellion of the swinging 60s. The shorter the better! Mary Quant, the crediting designer of the mini skirt, is a notable mention for her cultural impact on giving the women what their wardrobes wanted in the 1960's.
This time was infused with protest and transformation, as movements for women’s liberation and civil rights gained force, young women turned away from the traditional restrictions of previous eras and toward fashions that reflected autonomy, energy, and self expression.
The babydoll became more than a dress. It became a signal of individuality, youth, and a refusal to be restrained.
From grunge, coquette, to boho chic, the babydoll is a shapeshifter for all aesthetics; maintaining its glory in freeing the female self expression.
